06 Apr Don’t Be A Kit-Napper!
Kitten season is in full swing! Each kitten season (usually April – October), Dallas Animal Services takes in more than 1,300 underaged kittens. Unfortunately, most of these kittens are mistakenly taken from their mothers while they are off searching for food by well-meaning animal lovers.
Don’t be a kit-napper! If you see kittens outside, stop and observe before you pick them up. If the mom has been gone for 8+ hours, or if the kittens appear sick, thin, or covered in fleas, you can take action to help those kittens by bringing them inside. To see if mom will come back, sprinkle a ring of flour around the kittens and return in several hours. If there are big paw prints in the flour, mom has been back to check on the kittens and is taking care of them. If after 8 hours there is no sign of mom, you can bring the kittens inside.
If you’re willing to care for the kittens until they’re two months old (or weigh 2 lbs) and can be fixed for adoption, call 311 and let them know you’re interested in being a finder foster so we can get you resources and supplies. Otherwise, text KITTEN to (833) 936-0421. Learn more about what to do if you find kittens.
P.S. If you are interested in fostering kittens, please sign up at BeDallas90.org/foster. We also need help in our Kitten Nursery, so if you’d like to volunteer bottle feeding and cleaning kittens, sign up at BeDallas90.org/volunteer.
